There are few things more traumatizing than learning that someone you love has been inflicted with a devastating disease. But imagine having to go through that while also in the public eye. We commend Love and Theft’s Stephen Barker Liles for opening up about his mother’s recent diagnosis with ALS/Lou Gehrig’s disease.

In a video on his Instagram page, you can hear the emotion, concern and love in his voice as he describes the affliction.

“This is me telling you something that is going on in my life,” he says. “I found out a couple of months ago that my mom has been diagnosed with ALS, which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. It’s a really, really rough, crazy, ruthless disease, which currently there is no cure.”

ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease is a neurological disease that affects a person’s motor skills. It is often displayed by involuntary muscle twitching and can eventually result in difficult speaking, swallowing and breathing.

“When we all found out we decided we would try to raise some money for new research with the ALS Tennessee chapter and for my mom for treatments and anything for her everyday needs,” he continues.

Stephen reached out to friends and they answered, and a special event will take place on Dec. 4 at the Ryman Auditorium to raise money for their efforts.
