There have been many performances in Toby Keith’s career that have elicited both praise and unsurpassed emotion. Songs such as “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue,” “American Soldier” and “Made in America” can all transport listeners right back to the moment they first heard them, and often, the emotions of that moment just come flooding back in.
So, when Toby took the stage Aug. 9 in New York and began talking about his friend Glen Campbell, who had just passed away the previous day, it was as if the audience instinctively knew that this would be a moment they would never forget.
“A great American country icon passed away this week – the great Glen Campbell,” Toby told the crowd before taking a sip from his iconic red solo cup. “[We are going to] pay homage to him tonight.”
Toby went on to perform Glen’s addictive hit “Wichita Lineman,” as pics of Glen and the two of them together flashed on the screen behind him. And as the song went on, the emotions seemed to get stronger and stronger, resulting in a haunting end that had to have everyone in the crowd tearing up.
